OCTOBER 2022: Due to COVID we were unable to travel for nearly two years, which means it’s been impossible to update our vegan travel guides. Therefore we cannot be sure if the below restaurants are still open, so please contact them directly to check. As travel has now restarted we will be updating guides accordingly, but in the meantime please check out the excellent HappyCow, which you can find via the link at the bottom of this vegan guide.

Here’s our Vegan Guide to Langkawi to help you out when you visit Malaysia’s biggest island and one of the most popular tourist destinations in this fabulous country, we love Malaysia, it’s one of our favourite places to travel as vegans because of the rich culture and all the the amazing Malaysian vegan food. The first thing to mention is unless you are planning to stay in a luxury resort that has perfected looking after vegans, your options in some parts of the island might be a little limited. Happy Cow only lists 2 vegan restaurants on the island and they are both in Kuah (we’ve reviewed them both below) but there are a number of tourist restaurants in the resort area Pantai Cenang that can cater for vegan guests.

Kuah Town and The Jetty

Whilst exploring, we spotted a few ‘nasi kandar’ places where there was the usual fare of dal and rice to be found. We also a pizza restaurant called ‘Artisans Pizza’ which had some vegetarian options with soy meat which looked like they could be veganised. The night market on Lecongan Putra 3 was worth a visit with options like vegetable fried rice, spiced chick peas and lots of mango and durian sticky rice sellers. There is a vegan restaurant near ‘Asia Hotel’ but it only opens on the 1st and 15th day of the lunar calendar, sadly it was closed when we were there. There are a few vegan food options at The Jetty, one of the stalls advertising arabic food and there is a branch of Starbucks who do have soya milk but little else. We did however find the good old ‘cup of corn’; the ubiquitous snack found in malls all over Malaysia, when ordring make sure to ask for no butter.

Very friendly owners greeted us upon arrival and made us feel welcome, explaining the menu and recommending certain dishes. The husband and wife team not only cook tasty and affordable vegan food they also offer a tour guide and travel agent service! We didn’t require their help but would ceratinly use them to book onward boats, taxis and tours in the future… The hotpot we ordered was packed with vegetables and tofu which were not only tasty but very filling. We also selected a ‘fish’ in soy with ginger which was delicious, normally we avoid mock fish dishes as they are a little too fish like for us but this was really good. The rich soy gravy and the sweet and crispy fried ginger worked really well with the mock fish, our lunch was served with white rice and ice lemon tea. It was good to see this was open in the evenings too as these type of restarants usually close at lunch time.

Langkawi Vegetarian Restaurant a self service restaurant where everything is vegan, you help yourself, eat, help yourself some more and then go and wash up your own dishes. Then you pay by donation, so you just leave what you like and all the money goes to charity, you are also welcome to take your own lunch box and help yourself to takeout (there were lots of locals doing this). It’s clean, friendly and the food was decent.
