The official park entry is within Mutiara Taman Negara, which makes life very simple when you join one of the many tours on offer. For those not brave enough to head into the jungle on their own, you can choose from river rides, jungle treks and canopy walks to keep yourselves busy. It was great to see members of the ‘Guardians of Wildlife’ team from the department of wildlife protection and national parks during our visit, they play such a vital role in preserving the rainforest and endangered species, not just in Taman Negara but throughout the whole of peninsula Malaysia. We loved spending time on the Tembeling River and headed off via boat on each day of our stay. Whether it was to ride the rapids, swim in the mountain waters, listen to the myriad jungle sounds, spot fish eagles swooping for their next meal, or observe how the native Orang Asli live their simple lives, we were never short of new experiences.

The Vegan Food

Spending time in the jungle as a vegan is always a worry, so of course we had all manner of snacks just in case we were hungry. Well, that certainly wasn’t the case at Mutiara Taman Negara, where in addition to the vegetarian options on the menu that were actually vegan, Chef Zam and his team were happy to adapt other dishes for us. Our advice is to ask for his assistance as soon as you arrive, because not only does he understand what vegan actually means, he’s also the one to know which dishes on the buffet need to be avoided due to using chicken stock. This is very common in Malaysia, where dishes that may appear vegan such as veggie soups, stir fried noodles and lentil dal, are seasoned with chicken powder making them unsuitable for vegans (or vegetarians of course). We enjoyed a selection of noodles, curries and stir fries with vegetables and tofu during our stay, and when we fancied something Western the pasta, pizza, salad and garlic bread options on the menu hit the spot too.

The Vegan Food Quest Verdict

Mutiara Taman Negara is perfect for those who want an authentic rainforest and jungle experience, but also enjoy some home comforts such as AC, comfy beds and a hot shower. The trips that can be booked separately if not included in your package, are a great introduction to the natural wonders of one of the oldest tropical rainforests on the planet. You certainly won’t go hungry at Mutiara Taman Negara, especially if you speak to Chef Zam who will be sure to look after you during your stay.
