Grand Hyatt Singapore
Before we visited Mezza9, the award winning restaurant at the Grand Hyatt Singapore, it offered guests 9 different cuisines to choose from, but after our amazing lunch, eating from a specially created vegan menu, we think they should add ‘vegan cusine’ to the list and make it a nice round 10. Why were we so impressed?

The Vegan Food
We always love to be presented with a vegan menu and that’s exactly what we got when we sat down to eat in this contemporary styled restaurant, located in the heart of the Orchard Road area of Singapore. But it was what was on the menu (and what subsequently arrived at our table) that really impressed us, beginning with this light and tasty ‘Vine-Ripened Tomato Salad’ (a signature dish that we’d definitely recommend).

Green zebra tomatoes, brown tomatoes, yellow cherry tomatoes and pickled eggplant in a basil vinaigrette
Our next course was from the Thai kitchen, a beautifully flavoured ‘Som O’ pomelo salad, where the slightly sharp and bitter segments of juicy pomelo and toasted peanuts were dressed with lime juice, palm sugar, spicy chillies, deep fried shallots and Chinese parsley to produce a fresh, sweet and spicy salad.

Excellent flavourings combined in this delicious and healthy salad (the deep fried shallots gave it something special)
From the Japanese kitchen we were delivered this daintily presented vegan sushi and yakitori, with fresh wasabi and pickled ginger. Good quality fresh shitake mushrooms and Japanese chillies which had a great chilli flavour without any of the heat, formed the basis of our plant-based yakitori.

Returning to the Thai kitchen, our next dish was a ‘Vegetable Green Curry’ full of Thai eggplant, carrots, snake beans and served with jasmine rice. The sauce was decadently rich with coconut cream and was flavoured with all the traditional green curry herbs and spices. A delicious version of a favourite Vegan Food Quest Thai dish.

From the Chinese kitchen, we were served some authentic ‘Cantonese Style Braised Bean Curd With Eggplant And Mushrooms’. Presented on a stylish wooden tray, with stir fried kai lan and crispy garlic fried rice, we loved the different flavours and textures as well as the chance to practice our chopstick skills (and the verdict after seeing our host skilfully use hers, is that we still need practice).

Simple, delicious flavours and textures
What better way to finish a meal like this than with another Thai classic that is naturally vegan – ‘Mango Sticky Rice’.

Every chef prepares and presents this dish differently and we enjoyed the mezza9 version for it’s moist, sweet sticky rice and thick, slightly salted coconut cream with sesame seeds
The Vegan Food Quest Verdict
Make a reservation at Mezza9 if you want to experience an excellent Orchard Road up-market vegan dining experience. Eat plant-based dishes inspired from the best flavours and cuisines in the region but don’t forget to call in advance to ask them to prepare a special vegan menu for you.
