The Westin Kuala Lumpur
Set in the heart of the city, The Westin Kuala Lumpur puts you right in the middle of the action, with vibrant Bukit Bintang just outside the door. It’s a short stroll to Pavilion Mall and even closer to the nearest MRT station, making it an ideal base for exploring the city’s top shopping, dining and nightlife. The signature White Tea scent greets you as you enter the bright, welcoming lobby, where friendly staff made an excellent first impression when we arrived to check in which continued throughout our stay. With 443 rooms, suites and residences to choose from, the hotel caters to both leisure and business travellers. Our spacious one bedroom residence was ideal for a longer stay, featuring a separate living room, kitchen, office space and a bathroom with a walk in shower and bathtub. All rooms, suites and residences feature The Heavenly Bed which accompanied by a Sleep Well lavender pillow balm helped us sleep soundly each night. Guests in the residences also enjoy a private entrance and dedicated lifts that lead directly to the accommodation and the Westin Club lounge, where drinks and light bites are served throughout the day.

The Vegan Food at The Westin Kuala Lumpur
Breakfast at The Living Room offered the best range of vegan options, though breakfast at the Westin Club lounge breakfast was also available with our room type. Mr Anil, who looked after us throughout our stay, was incredibly helpful, checking ingredients with the chefs, pointing out suitable dishes and ordering others to be prepared for us. Highlights included noodle soup, masala dosa, fresh sourdough with baked beans and veggies, a colourful salad bar and organic greens from BoomGrow Farms, an exciting farm to table partnership we’ve seen at other Westin resorts in Malaysia. Special vegan dishes were also prepared, such as stir fried noodles, oat milk porridge with berries, vegan pancakes and a delicious Indian breakfast selection including mini uttapam, aloo mutter and lentil vadai, all of which were superb.

It was great to see a clearly labelled plant based section on the à la carte menu at The Living Room. Over the course of our stay, we worked our way through most of the dishes. Day one began with a warming roasted tomato and basil soup topped with a crunchy crouton, and a crisp Asian slaw made with purple cabbage, carrot and red onion. The next day brought a comforting cumin and garlic lentil soup and a light chickpea and quinoa salad with lemon and mint. For mains, we tried the no-beef burger (a no-chicken patty in disguise!) in a green tea bun with fries, tangy sweet and sour meatballs with rice, and a hearty vegan bolognaise. For dessert, the mango sago gula Melaka with coconut cream and treacle was our top pick, though the mixed berries panna cotta would have been better with a touch more coconut cream.

The Westin Kuala Lumpur’s popular ‘high tea’ is served every day in The Living Room between 3pm and 5pm. A delicious and perfectly plant based vegan option is available if requested in advance. The savoury trio that we were served included bruschetta on sourdough, mini mushroom sliders and soft rolls filled with guacamole. For the sweet side of our Westin high tea, we enjoyed kuih lapis, mango sago with pomelo and vegan mochi, all served with refreshing peppermint tea. This was a lovely way to spend a relaxing and somewhat refined afternoon in the city.

The Vegan Essentials
The 24 hour gym was well equipped, and the saltwater pool (one of the few in Kuala Lumpur) was a welcome way to start each morning. We appreciated the Marriott brand standard glass water bottles and refillable bathroom amenities in our room, although it wasn’t clear whether the signature White Tea products were vegan friendly. The pillow menu was a nice bonus, offering non feather memory foam, contour and bolster options. Our visit coincided with Global Wellness Day, which The Westin celebrated with yoga, sound healing, ice baths and a wellness market showcasing local and independent brands. We loved the HypeRice massage gun demonstration by the lovely team from Slim Studio, so much so that we bought one for ourselves, and learned more about BoomGrow Farms innovative modular farming. The Asli Co were also present, sharing their work with indigenous women to produce lavender eye masks (we bought one of these too!), pillow sprays and more, with profits supporting community education initiatives. The atmosphere was lively, uplifting and filled with purpose. In The Westin Club lounge, we enjoyed almond milk lattes and more traditional Malaysian kuih such as kuih dadar and colourful, coconut coated treats. Despite being larger than most lounges we’ve previously visited, the space felt cosy and calm, with city views and an outdoor terrace to enjoy.

The Vegan Food Quest Verdict
The Westin Kuala Lumpur has a winning location, right in the heart of Bukit Bintang with everything you need close at hand. Add in warm, attentive service from the friendly staff team and a surprisingly thoughtful vegan offering, and it’s a strong choice for plant based travellers heading to Kuala Lumpur. The addition of a plant based menu section, collaborations with local farms and the Marriott global sustainability initiatives elevate the experience even further. It’s a great option for anyone seeking comfort and convenience in the Malaysian capital and we most certainly look forward to returning.
