Sule Shangri-La Yangon

Say ‘minglabar’ (which means ‘hello’ in Myanmar) to your vegan friendly home from home in Yangon.

Sule Shangri-La Yangon is located just a short walk away from the busy Sule Pagoda, all of the ‘must see’ colonial era buildings of the Central Business District and the bustling Chinese and Indian quarters, Yangon has the most colonial period buildings of any Southeast Asian city so take the time to wander about and imagine life in a different era.

The iconic Shwedagon Pagoda is never far from sight with stunning views enjoyed from the Horizon Club Lounge as well as our Horizon Club room; a visit here is essential during any trip to Yangon and the Sule Shangri-La Yangon is only a short taxi ride away if you want to explore further.

The Vegan Food

Vegans are well looked after at Sule Shangri-La Yangon with plenty of chances to try local food from Myanmar as well as other dishes from around Asia and classic western choices.

Breakfast at Café Sule has a lively atmosphere with the clink of crockery mingling with the sizzling sounds of the live kitchen stations where soups and stir fries are being cooked to order. Order food here at one of the stations and handover a numbered stick so you can wait at your table while your food is prepared, the vegetable noodle soup was nothing short of delicious.

Head to the juice bar where carafes of fresh juice and coconut water sit next to platters of fresh cut tropical fruit, continue on the healthy path and check out the extensive salad bar where you can make your own fresh salads. Dishes changed daily but delicious soba noodles, carrot and apple slaw, seaweed salad and a beetroot salad were among the daily vegan options when we visited. You’ll also find vegan sushi here too. Winning.

For curry lovers, choose delectably spiced Indian food. The Southern Indian vada, stuffed parathas, puri, and potato curry (served with coconut chutney and fresh, green coriander chutney) were our favourites.

Don’t forget to try the local specialities like ‘si hta min’ Burmese yellow sticky rice with fresh coconut shavings, fried shallots and salted sesame seeds. Or the sweet local halwa or banana and rice flour cakes.

At night head to the Horizon Club Lounge for drinks and canapés. The buffet has some vegan options including a selection of salads, but you can talk to the chef and ask for some vegan options to be made then sit back and enjoy dishes like deep fried, spiced potato Indian snacks served with fresh coriander chutney and stir fried seasoned vegetables.
