Maxwell Reserve Singapore, Autograph Collection

Maxwell Reserve Singapore, Autograph Collection is set within a beautifully restored century old heritage building on the edge of Chinatown, and it immediately feels layered with history. The colonial façade of Murray Terrace stands quietly confident among the surrounding streets, hinting at what lies inside. Once through the doors, the lobby reveals dark woods, low lighting and walls filled with antique artwork and family artefacts dating back to the 1700s. Designed by French architect Jacques Garcia, the interiors reflect the passions of owner Satvinder Garcha and his family, from polo memorabilia to references to Singapore and Indian heritage, all brought together in a way that feels personal rather than styled for effect. This is very much a luxury hotel, but one with soul and character, offering something far more interesting than the polished glass towers found elsewhere in the city, while its Chinatown location places culture, history and food right on the doorstep.

Our room at Maxwell Reserve Singapore

Our Maxwell Junior Club Suite continued the hotel’s rich and thoughtful design, with deep wood panelling, heavy fabrics and carefully chosen soft furnishings creating a warm and welcoming feel. The bedroom was calm and comfortable, anchored by a bed that delivered exactly what was needed after a long travel day. The marble bathroom was generous in size, with a spacious walk in rain shower that alongside the marble vanity top felt genuinely indulgent without being over the top. A well stocked minibar and espresso machine were neatly tucked away and impressive in their own right, though for us the morning routine was simple, starting the day quietly with peppermint tea, warm water and reflection. This was a room that encouraged slowing down, drawing the curtains and enjoying the space rather than rushing out, which is exactly what we needed after nearly one month on the road prior to our check in.

The Vegan Food at Maxwell Reserve Singapore

Breakfast is served daily from 7am until 11am and sets an easy, unhurried tone for the day. Our breakfast started with turmeric lattes and fresh grapefruit juice, followed by bowls of fruit and berries paired with crunchy granola and creamy vegan yoghurt which was delicious, having vegan yoghurt was a real treat that was much appreciated. An off menu avocado toast arrived served with roasted tomatoes, alongside the tofu scramble from the main breakfast menu, which was served with crispy hash browns. The tofu was soft, well seasoned with pink salt and turmeric, and mixed with chopped bell peppers before being loaded onto toasted sourdough that added that extra texture which pairs so well with the tofu. It was a satisfying and well balanced plant based breakfast that was something we wish we could enjoy again and again, especially the vegan yoghurt and the tofu scramble which were our favourites.

The Vegan Food at Culivate

Cultivate is where Maxwell Reserve truly comes into its own, operating as a fully vegan, organic and gluten free restaurant from late morning through to dinner. Lunch began with the Leek and Roasted Pumpkin Tart, made with a rich shortcrust pastry, lightly toasted fennel seeds and sautéed leeks finished with hazelnut oil, and it was easily one of those dishes you wish you had ordered for yourself instead of to share. We followed this with two mains, the Whole Roasted Portobello Mushroom served over creamy butterbean mash with sun dried tomatoes, onions and gentle spice, and the Smoked Onion and Asparagus Risotto, rich with vegetable broth and elevated by fresh lemon rind. Both dishes were comforting without feeling heavy and showed real confidence in plant based cooking. We then shared the Vegan Cheese Platter with artisanal cheeses from Miyoko Schinner, featuring pepperjack, charcoal, herbal and paprika cheeses served with berries, nuts, rice crackers and pear chutney, which made for a relaxed and satisfying end to a long lunch. Other dishes available at Cultivate include a vegan earth bowl, classic hummus with za’atar and orange oil, a hearty vegan burger and a selection of vegan cakes, giving the menu impressive depth and certainly a reason for us to return.

The Vegan Essentials

As part of the Marriott family, Maxwell Reserve incorporates several sustainability measures that align well with responsible travel. Bathroom amenities were provided in refillable containers and were paraben free and cruelty free, which we appreciated. It was disappointing to find single use plastic water bottles in the room, although the team were happy to refill our own bottles on request, allowing us to avoid unnecessary waste during our stay. The rooftop pool was closed while we were there, so we did not get to experience it, though it looked like a calm space to escape the city. The 24 hour gym was open and well equipped, but with such a comfortable suite and a fully vegan restaurant on site, it was not where we chose to spend our time.

The Vegan Food Quest Verdict

As long time Marriott Bonvoy members, we have stayed at countless Marriott properties across the region and have consistently found them to be vegan friendly, but very few go as far as offering a dedicated plant based restaurant. For that reason alone, Maxwell Reserve Singapore, Autograph Collection stands out. When combined with its heritage setting, strong sense of identity, thoughtful approach to sustainability and genuinely good vegan food, it becomes a hotel we would happily return to. It delivers vegan luxury in a way that feels natural and unforced, offering a stay that is comfortable, characterful and memorable without trying too hard.
