The Westin Grande Sukhumvit, Bangkok
This five-star hotel is truly in the heart of the city, right on Sukhumvit Road and just a stone’s throw from the busy Asoke intersection. The Westin Grande Sukhumvit, Bangkok has been welcoming both business and leisure travellers alike since 1993, and if hotels could tell a story, I’m sure it would keep us all on the edge of our seats. From the towering exterior, you enter at ground level before taking an elevator to the elegant 7th-floor lobby and then another elevator to the guest rooms. Our deluxe executive double on the 22nd floor was well appointed, with all of the amenities you would expect from an international five-star luxury hotel. It also allowed us access to The Westin Club Lounge on the 24th floor, where various drinks and food offerings are available throughout the day.

The Vegan Food
We needed a little help during breakfast at Seasonal Tastes, but the team were more than happy to assist with our request for vegan and plant-based food. The buffet items were clearly labelled for all dietary requirements and allergens, which was good to see. There were a few vegan items but not many, so the assistance was essential. We started with healthy wheatgrass shots and not-so-healthy but absolutely essential oat milk lattes before moving on to oatmeal with diced fruit, chia seeds, and maple syrup from the buffet. We then enjoyed outstanding masala dosas, followed by a light and nutritious vegetable noodle soup. The dosas were so good we went back for more, which, accompanied by double espressos, left us feeling very satisfied.

We headed to Kisso for lunch, as they had a vegetarian bento box that sounded great and was suitable for vegans. Kisso is the Japanese restaurant at The Westin Grande Sukhumvit, and we were lucky enough to dine in one of their private rooms, which was a special experience. They made three small changes to ensure our bento box was vegan as opposed to vegetarian, but we didn’t feel in any way that we were missing out. Delicate Japanese flavour profiles shone throughout, with plenty of umami for that extra punch. The tempura was light and crispy, the avocado salad was fresh and creamy, whilst the tofu steak with mushrooms was simply delightful. It would be impossible to choose a favourite from our multi-layered bento box experience, as it was the combination of the textures and the flavours that made it special. We were very impressed indeed.

It was exciting to find a plant-based section on the à la carte menu at Seasonal Tastes, with clearly labelled vegan options, including a plant-based burger and local dishes such as vegan pad krapow, vegan green curry, and vegan pad Thai. We tried the trio of Thai dishes, followed by mango sticky rice, and were not disappointed. The pad krapow was made with the Thai alt-meat brand Let’s Plant Meat, and it really hit the spot. With great flavours and perfect spice levels (for us), this was our favourite of the three savoury dishes we ordered. The pad Thai was very good and had lots of tofu for that extra protein hit, whilst the green curry was creamy, flavourful, and packed with veggies. As tofu lovers, we would have enjoyed some tofu in this dish too. The mango sticky rice was that perfect blend of sweetness from the mango and subtle saltiness from the coconut milk. It was served with a trio of colourful sticky rices, which were pleasing to the eye in addition to being tasty.

The Vegan Essentials
The pool on the 8th floor was a great place to cool down and escape the hot and sticky Bangkok heat, whilst the 24-hour gym offered the opportunity to work off some of the food that we had eaten during our Bangkok staycation. As a Marriott International hotel, there were no plastic water bottles in our room, and the bathroom amenities were in refillable dispensers in line with the brand’s sustainability commitment. It would be nice to see them phase out the various plastic razors, toothbrushes, and other small amenities and replace them with something more sustainable in the not-too-distant future.

The Vegan Food Quest Verdict
If you want to stay in a five-star hotel in the centre of the city that’s just a short walk from the BTS and MRT stations, multiple world-class malls, and countless restaurants and bars, then The Westin Grande Sukhumvit, Bangkok, is a very good option. With plenty of vegan options either on the menus or easily adapted from existing vegetarian menu options, it’s also a great choice if you want to be able to eat plant-based food in the comfort of your hotel without having to head out and explore.
