Zula
Seminyak, Bali
Never would we have expected to find such a great, mainly vegan restaurant in Seminyak, an oasis in the middle of the shops, bars, hotels and clubs of busy Seminyak, it was a treat to find the good food and welcoming staff of Zula Restaurant.
Located on Jalan Dhyana Purana 5, just off the main Jalan Kuta in Seminyak, the restaurant was easy to find and felt quite central. A quick taxi ride from your hotel anywhere in Kuta, Legian or Seminyak will only set you back a couple of dollars.
The Vegan Food
The menu at Zula is extensive offering a varied range of interesting and healthy vegetarian and vegan dishes, all very clearly labelled for various diets (gluten free, wheat free, raw). The food is mainly vegan, but some dishes contain raw honey and some other non-vegan products (egg in some of the desserts plus goat cheese was spotted on the menu) so it’s best to check.
They serve some nice fresh juices and other healthy soft drinks as well offering beer
We ate a range of food during our 2 visits, including the Quinoa Coconut Curry (tasty but missing the Tempeh that was on the menu), the ‘Almost Perfect Burrito’, some nachos with salsa, guacamole, hummus and tofu cheese – all fresh and full of flavour.
However, the star of the show was the Falafel Sandwich and a salad that we ordered, so good that we’re still thinking about it and wishing we could eat it again.
We love falafels at the Vegan Food Quest but they have to be pretty good to get our seal of approval and the Zula Falafel Sandwich certainly qualified. Not only that, but it was so good that it made it straight onto the Vegan Food Quest list of all time great falafel eating experiences.
Crispy falafels nestled in a hugely generous amount of hummus (bound to keep us vegans happy), tahini sauce, pickled cabbage and a fresh and ‘Arabic salad’ with chopped cucumber and tomato amongst other things, all sandwiched in between a wholemeal pitta bread. Plus, it came with a fresh green chilli sauce that was so tasty that we couldn’t stop eating it, even though it was so hot our eyes were watering. Perfect.
Our salad contained delights such as tempeh croutons, raw beetroot, grated carrot, fresh green leaves and alfalfa sprouts, and was topped off with a tahini dressing. It was fresh, crunchy and bursting with flavour as well as being full of colour and life – just how we like our salads. We loved how it felt very nutritionally balanced with the extra protein from the tempeh. Plus it was a really good size making it a filling choice and scoring more points with us.
Other Stuff
The staff were friendly and answered all our questions knowledgeably even able to make suggestions and recommendations about what we might like to try, we thought their T-shirts saying “nothing with a face or a mother” were awesome.
There were loads of great products for sale to look at while we waited for our food. Brilliant to stock up on beauty products, vitamins, supplements, healthy snacks, nuts, seeds, and hard to find organic health food products.
Who could want more?! There were condiment offerings on all the tables which included sesame seeds. We really wanted to use them but our food was so perfectly seasoned we just settled for appreciating how pretty they looked.
