OCTOBER 2022: Due to COVID we were unable to travel for nearly two years, which means it’s been impossible to update our vegan travel guides. Therefore we cannot be sure if the below restaurants are still open, so please contact them directly to check. As travel has now restarted we will be updating guides accordingly, but in the meantime please check out the excellent HappyCow, which you can find via the link at the bottom of this vegan guide.

Here is our Vegan Guide to Koh Phangan. An island that is famed for the Full Moon festivities has become a kind of paradise for vegan travellers. With vegan options all over the island it is a small corner of the Northwest that has developed a vegan scene that would be hard to rival even by much bigger towns. For that reason, we decided to stay right in the heart of the action in Sri Thanu with the plan to check out what everyone has been talking about. We hope you enjoy our Vegan Guide to Koh Phangan!

Vegan Restaurants in Koh Phangan

Eat.co

Eat.Co
Sri Thanu
(9am-10pm every day, closed Thursday)

Eat.Co Bruncherie
Thong Sala
(9am-5pm every day)

With 2 locations, one in Sri Thanu and the other in Thong Sala, Eat.Co have become the ‘go to’ vegan options in Koh Phangan. At first impression we can see why, the breakfast menu at their Sri Thanu outlet reads like a ‘everything we like to eat for breakfast list’. We ordered Sweet Toast, Hash Skillet and a ‘fully loaded’ Mushroom Toast. All were large portions and decent with the Sweet Toast being our favourite. Piled high with peanut butter, banana, apple, almonds, coconut and caramel sauce it was very naughty but very nice. The hash skillet was a little under seasoned for us and didn’t need the bread in our opinion. It was pretty good though and we planned to return for dinner before leaving but it just didn’t happen.

Pure Vegan Heaven

Pure Vegan Heaven
Sri Thanu
Koh Phangan

Opening Times: 11.30am-10pm every day, closed Sunday

Garden setting just back from the main road in Sri Thanu with a relatively limited menu compared to other options. We selected the Smoky BBQ Bowl and the Nachos to share for lunch. These were 2 of the tastiest dishes we had in Koh Phangan and if we were staying longer we would have returned for sure. There didn’t appear to be any Jackfruit in the BBQ bowl or ‘chorizo’ in the nachos but maybe they had ran out? Very tasty all the same despite the missing ingredients!

Vegan Food Stall – Panthip Market

Vegan Food Stall
Panthip Market
Thong Sala
Koh Phangan

Currently closed but will hopefully re-open soon…

This stall is in the centre of the market before you get to the food court at the rear and serves a selection of vegan food both Western and Thai. We shared a black bean burrito which due to the portion size was good value. It was served on a plate with knife and fork so we were able to take it to the food court and eat at the tables. The burrito tasted ok, and the staff were friendly making this a decent vegan option in Panthip Market.

Soul Organics – Panthip Market

Opening Times: 10am-8pm every day

Another vegan option in the vegan friendly Panthip Market was Soul Organics which is located at the back within the food court. We shared a massaman curry which was way too sweet and had little spice. The fact that the vegetables were organic, the rice was brown and the staff member was friendly went some way to make up for the lack of authenticity in this dish.

Vegetarian Restaurants in Koh Phangan

Taste from Heaven

Taste From Heaven
Sri Thanu
Koh Phangan

Opening Times: 9am-10pm every day

These guys have had a Restaurant in Chiang Mai for a few years and opened on Koh Phangan in 2018. Extensive vegetarian and vegan menu with Thai and Western options. We had the Khao Soy which was pretty good meaning we went back again the next day when disappointingly it was not as good. Also had Tom Kha and a ‘bacon’ sandwich just because we could and they were both just OK.

Karma Kafe

Sri Thanu
Koh Phangan

Opening Times: 8am-10.30pm every day, closed Monday

This place was very chilled and seemed like a nice place to kick back and relax. We didn’t eat but just stopped for a quick drink and they were both good. We had a Coconut Caramel Frappe and a Yummy Tummy Tumeric Latte which were both very good and refreshing on a super hot day.

Vegan Friendly Restaurants in Koh Phangan

Benjamin’s Hut

Benjamin’s Hut
Sri Thanu
Koh Phangan

Opening Times: 9am-10pm every day

This was our favourite place to chill on the beach. Friendly staff, relaxing music and a variety of seats, hammocks and swing seats to relax. They also make awesome coconut smoothies and almond milk cappuccinos which combined with a fruit plate were the perfect start to the day, it was our ‘pre breakfast’ spot during our whole stay in Sri Thanu. We would consider staying here in future as loved the vibe and the staff.

Taboon

Taboon
Sri Thanu
Koh Phangan

Opening Times: 7am-11pm every day

Middle Eastern restaurant with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere just North of the village that has a veggie menu with vegan options clearly marked. We enjoyed all of the food with the Iraqi Sambusak being our favourite. The sambusak were a selection of ‘pockets of oven fresh breads’ with various fillings. The Iraqi version was packed with a delicious chick pea mixture, we’ve never had these before but will search them out again. Kind of like a Middle Eastern Cornish pasty? Decent pitta, falafels and dips too. Highly recommended.

Heaven Beach Bar

Heaven Beach Bar
Sri Thanu
Koh Phangan

Opening Times: 10am-10pm every day

Just North of the main village and right on the beach is Heaven. Lovely location and the perfect place to spend a relaxed evening amongst the trees and listening to the ocean. Option to add tofu and / or brown rice to many of the veggie dishes made this a simple and enjoyable option. We enjoyed a Penang curry and sweet and sour vegetables both with tofu and they were around 100 THb each.

Opening Times: 10am-10pm every day

The massaman curry was pretty good but again lacking spice and the veg tempura was good. We also ordered tofu and eggplant which was in so much oil it was almost inedible. The family that run this place were very friendly and we would go back and check out other items on the menu which had many vegan friendly options.

Joy of Life Cafe

Opening Times: 8am-8pm every day

Just up the road from where we stayed was this small cafe and adjoining health food shop. They made the most delicious coconut yoghurt which we enjoyed served with mixed fruit. We also had a coconut milk latte and coconut matcha latte which were both amazing. We loved this spot…

Vegan Shopping in Koh Phangan

Walking Street Market

Thong Sala
Koh Phangan

Every Saturday evening a street near to the pier in Thong Sala is transformed into a walking street with a whole manner of food, clothes and other items available to buy. It’s kind of fun (if you like that sort of thing) and seems to draw tourists and locals alike. There was plenty of fresh fruit available and also a variety of vegan friendly desserts and sweets which we enjoyed. Unfortunately we did not find any savoury food that was suitable for vegans but maybe this was due to visiting in low season as we’ve read about vegan gyros and other vegan delights being available previously.

Limpipong

Thong Sala
Koh Phangan

Our friend who lives on Koh Phangan took us here and for that we were very greatful. It will certainly be a regular haunt of ours next time we visit Koh Phangan as we plan to have our own kitchen. Everything from homemade hummus, tahini and chocolate peanut butter to a freezer full of tempeh and various mock meats made us very excited indeed.

Tesco Lotus

Thong Sala
Koh Phangan

This was the favourite of the 3 supermarkets in town and seemed to have more available than Makro and Big C which also have stores in Thong Sala. We found plenty of supplies including mushroom ‘oyster’ sauce, vegan mayo and our favourite baked okra snacks. We are already planning our return to Koh Phangan and this time will make sure we’ve got a kitchen so we can cook our own food in addition to eating out. There’s plenty of fresh produce and everything you need to create nutritious home cooked food in one of the supermarkets and this would certainly add to our enjoyment on the island.
